A Nice Weekend

Saturday Lisa I started the day out watching Beowulf - great movie.  The only review I heard was on NPR a couple of weeks ago, the guy was bashing it because of the excessive violence.  In my mind, the violence and the action didn’t get in the way of a great story.  I loved their take on the story, making Beowulf out to be a flawed hero.

Later that night I caught The Ultimate Fighter Finale, it was fantastic.  I always make picks on mmaplayground.com and the first 3 fights went exactly as I had picked, which is a rarity.  The 4th fight featured Jared Rollins vs. John Koppenhaver, which was, up to that point, the fight of the night.  Both guys were aggressive standing and on the ground, looking for knockout or the submission.  Half way through the 3rd round, both guys looked absolutely exhausted, and when Rollins took the dominant position, I figurered he was about to pull off a victory.  Suddenly Koppenhaver pulled off one of the best sweeps I have ever seen, threw a few elbows and scored a KO.  It was amazing.

The next fight was the “season finale” or whatever, with the winner getting awarded a UFC contract.  History shows that they also give anyone who gave us an exciting fight a contract as well, so it was just bragging rights.  I had picked Tommy Speer to win a close decision, he had shown time and time again he was as tough as nails, getting out of several very sticky situations during the show.  But Mac Danzig proved to be a lot more skilled than anyone else he had fought so far, and scored a submission very quickly.

The final fight was Roger Huerta vs Clay Guida.  Both of these guys fight every fight full blast, so I knew this would be good.  It was back and forth the whole way, Huerta dominating the stand-up, Guida scoring takedowns and working Huerta over on the ground.  I would give Guida the edge up to the third round, as he seemed to control the fight more.  Then Huerta connected with couple of knees, knocking him to the canvas, then took his back and submitted him.  I was in the basement and Lisa heard me cheering 3 floors away.

Sunday we went to see The Golden Compass.  It was ok, but I wish I had waited for the video.  There really wasn’t that much character development to speak of, so I really didn’t care about the story.  Towards the end, I was thinking I could read the book, it would probably do a better job.  But during the credits, some idiot who sat right behind us was blabbing on and on about the book and really turned me off to the whole idea of reading it.  I gave a snide comment as we got up to leave, he just ignored me and kept blabbing on.
